Old vine standouts from our in-house blind tasting

Old vine standouts from our in-house blind tasting

Many of you are aware of the problem we face when attempting to create a shortlist of our mature Australian wines, given the scale of our collection. Even when taking into consideration only one aspect – a region, grape or style – it feels we are leaving too many great wines behind.

We thought the only way to judge these wines correctly was to put them through a series of extensive in-house blind tastings. The aim was simple; to compile a short-list of the best Old Vine wines which scored the highest amongst The Vinorium team...

Pleasingly, and a confession which I am happy to share – several of these wines have been overlooked by ourselves in favour of more renowned producers. Massena The Eleventh Hour Shiraz was the outright winner and we believe offers some of the best drinking Shiraz amongst our entire collection.

Of course, the below is a tiny fraction of what is available from our entire Australian collection, which has reduced by over 110,000 bottles since April. Sadly, many wines have completely sold-out and will not be returning, although this does make room for a few special parcels, which we have been picking up over the past months. One notable inclusion is a tiny parcel of stunning mature (2010) Chardonnay from Robert Oatley, Margaret River. Only two stockists in the world exist for this wonderfully, mature wine (with bags of life left in it)... Great reviews from James Halliday and incredibly well priced too...

Kaesler Wines

In 1999, renowned Australianwinemaker Reid Bosward bought Kaesler (originally established nearly a century earlier, in 1893) and set about developing its portfolio, focusing in particular on its single vineyard wines. Many of Kaesler’s vineyards contained gnarled, dry-grown Shiraz vines dating back to 1893 - these vines are some of the largest holdings of nineteenth century plantings in the world and provide the backbone of the intense wines they produce today.

Massena Wines

The Eleventh Hour Shiraz 2006

massena wine

94 Points – Robert Parker

The 2006 Eleventh Hour Shiraz was sourced from 60- to 125-year-old vines that were saved from the bulldozer at the eleventh hour. The wine was aged for 20 months in seasoned French oak hogsheads (300-liter barrels compared to 225 liters for a standard barrique). It exhibits an alluring bouquet of wood smoke, charcoal, mineral, black raspberry, and wild blueberry. Liqueur-like on the palate, it has layers of savor fruit, incipient complexity, and impeccable balance. Light on its feet, this gorgeous effort will be in its prime from 2012 to 2024. The Massena wines are made by the talented Dan Standish. Have a look at Dan’s own label The Standish Wines
