Deep Woods Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Deep Woods

Score: 97

This has superb ripeness and deep-set cassis in addition to dark cherries and other cabernet fruit on the nose. Sweet herbals and leafiness also come through. The oak is stylishly applied; it has terrific class and purity. The palate has a very concentrated core of ripe tannin that holds the middle of the palate with an expansive, building frame that's saturated in plum and black-cherry flavors. There's a lick of iodine, too. This is long and seamless, muscular and supple. Terrific balance. Drink now to 2030+.

Score: 97

Superior pinot once again, this is a wine of real substance and weight, and one that's powerful, ripe and commanding. There's a layer of cedary/spicy savoriness as well as an earthy thread, dark and stony minerals and a wealth of ripe darker cherries and plums. The palate has impressive weight and power and really billows out through the middle with fleshy and smooth dark-cherry flavors. There are plenty of spices and earth and a lot of power. The flavors are saturated, and the finish has a lip-smacking deliciousness to it; it's flamboyant and full of life. Drink now and for 5+ years.

Lots of winemaker influence here — some attractive lees influence featuring vanillin and baking spices — but there's also plenty of grapefruit and lemongrass. The palate has sinewy, grippy and pithy texture and plenty of power and drive. The acidity sits inside peach and lemon-flavored fruit, making for good poise. Drink now.

Tolpuddle Vineyard Pinot Noir 2015

Tolpuddle

Score: 97

The fourth vintage under Shaw & Smith control, this has such immediate appeal and attractive style it will be hard to see this wine making it to many cellars. The nose is super expressive with swirling spicy red cherries and boysenberry-scented pinot noir fruit. It's gently sappy, showing some herbal notes and toasty, spicy oak. The palate has intensity, depth and length; it's fleshy and supple through the middle, but the ever-so-slightly tart red-cherry flavors are mouth-wateringly fresh. The tannins are perfectly groomed, and the acidity is pitch-perfect. A great vintage: They have totally nailed it! Drink now.

Shaw & Smith Lenswood Chardonnay 2014

Shaw and Smith

Score: 97

This is a very attractive and deceptively powerful chardonnay from a high-altitude site (500m) and one that delivers a latent, smouldering depth on the nose. Toasty, hazelnut-like oak breathes up through flinty complexity and a wealth of white peaches, melon, limes and grapefruit. The palate's super taut, really succulent and powerful, holding this thing tight for start to finish. Electrifying tension to this wine; new heights have been reached. Drink now to 2020+. 180 dozen produced.

Deep Woods Reserve Chardonnay 2015

Deep woods

Score: 96

A terrific chardonnay for this in-form producer. The powerful Margaret River chardonnay muscle has been nicely tamed and then built in the winery to round out with measure and balance. The intense stone fruits and flinty grapefruit aromas are framed in spicy, fresh-cut oak and almost chalky stony nuances. The palate has fleshy fruit that wrenches tight with assertive acid drive and tension. Drink now to 2020+.
