The perfect Bloody Mary cocktail recipe
Believed to the best 'hair-of-the-dog' hangover cure, the Bloody Mary is one of the nation's best loved cocktails to accompany a weekend brunch.
Vodka and tomato juice form the base of a classic Bloody Mary. The rest is up to you... The usual additions include a spicy kick of Tabasco and a salty dash of Worcestershire Sauce with a pinch of celery salt and freshly ground black pepper for seasoning finished with a celery garnish. However other more unusual ingredients include grated fresh horseradish, clam juice, (really?!) and pickle brine, sometimes with a garnish of a couple of cubes of cheese...
So how do you take yours?
Fill a highball glass with ice. Over the ice pour 2 parts vodka (the better quality vodka, the better the Bloody Mary!) and 4 parts tomato juice.
Now comes the creative bit – Make your drink your own by adding a few dashes of Worcestershire sauce and a few drops of Tabasco. Add a good squeeze of lemon juice, pinch of celery salt and a few grinds of black pepper. Then taste… Add more Tabasco if you want to spice it up or more lemon juice if you want to add acidity.
Then garnish with a celery stick and a slice of lemon. Top with finely grated fresh horseradish and enjoy… Serve with your favourite brunch dish - Eggs Benedict, a bacon sandwich with lashings of butter and brown sauce or a huge stack of American pancakes topped with maple syrup and bacon….
