Award Winning Wines from Vidal

Award Winning Wines from Vidal

Vidal wines have featured in our portfolio for several years and we have been delighted with the consistent quality. More recently, we sampled their ‘Legacy’ range, which and to be perfectly blunt, were bloody amazing – Perhaps some of the best wines we have sampled out of New Zealand for a very long time.

Their awards and pundit scores are justified but nevertheless, quite difficult to take in when you examine them all in detail. We have never seen so many consistently,
high-scoring wines from one producer and are over the moon to add these to our portfolio.

As ever, we have taken a stock position, which allows Vinorium customers to enjoy these great wines by the bottle or the case. *We strongly recommend you treat yourself to at least one of each wine...

Vidal Legacy Chardonnay 2015

Vidal Legacy Chardonnay 2015

Platinum: Best NZ Chardonnay
Decanter World Wine Awards 2017

19.5 Points - Raymond Chan

Bright, light straw-yellow colour with pale lemon-green hues, light on the rim. The nose is refined and tightly bound with intense and penetrating aromas of white stonefruits, minerals, gunflint reductive complexities and nutty lees and oak. The aromatics are expressed wine beauty and finesse and seamlessly interwoven, building in depth and concentration with aeration. Medium-full bodied, the palate is bright, lively and refreshing with open and ethereal, mouthfilling, subtle flavours of white stonefruits, citrus fruits, gunflint and nutty layers intermingling with chalky mineral elements. The flavours build to coat the mouth with fine phenolic textures, and the palate is enlivened by bright, brisk and lacy acidity. This flows with vitality and energy and carries to a long, lingering finish of stonefruits, minerals flint and nuts with dry textures. This is a mouthfilling Chardonnay with layers of stonefruits, citrus fruits, gunflint, nuts and minerals, on a racy, textural palate

97 Points - Bob Campbell

Ranked #1 of 23 2015 Chardonnay tasted from Hawkes Bay “Rich, intense, yet silken Chardonnay with a seductive mix of ripe tree fruit, peach, nectarine and savoury nut and bran biscuit flavours. The wine’s outstanding feature is an ethereal texture and very lengthy finish. It’s a powerhouse clothed in a featherbed jacket. A seriously good Chardonnay that will age well but is irresistible now”.

The signature style of this exceptional wine continues with this latest offering. Powerful aromas of flint and grapefruit combined with elegant stone fruit, lemon peel and cedar on the nose. The palate is concentrated and focused with superb mid palate weight and fine texture, brilliantly structured by firm acidity. Love the fruit purity with engaging gun smoke complexity, the wine offers wonderful balance and poise, and finishes extremely long and linear. At its best: 2016 to 2025.

Vidal Legacy Syrah 2014

International Wine Challenge 2017 - Gold Medal Winner
Hawkes Bay A&P Wine Awards 2016 - Gold Medal Winner

19.5 Points - Raymond Chan

Very dark, full, near saturated black-hued purple-red colour, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is tight and concentrated with rich and sweetly ripe aromas of black berried fruits and black plums with a fine and integrated amalgam of black pepper, and black and violet florals, unveiling subtle layers of spicy and nutty oak and nuance of iron-earth. This is beautifully proportioned and refined in expression. Medium-full bodied, the fruit is tightly bound but clearly rich and succulent, showing flavours of ripe blackberries and black plums with hints of blueberries along with liquorice melded with black pepper, iron-earth and subtle black florals. This has a concentrated core with linear drive and energy, the fruit balanced by fine-grained, significant tannin structure and fresh, integrated acidity. The wine flows with textural finesse and succulence, leading to a long and sustained, vibrant finish. This is a concentrated Syrah with ripe black fruits along with complex black pepper and iron-earth nuances balanced by fine structure.

98 Points - Sam Kim, Wine Orbit

A wine of total seduction, the gloriously perfumed bouquet shows dark plum, blueberry, floral and game with nuances of cedar and black pepper. The palate is powerful and sumptuous, and delivers waves of delectable fruit flavours, enhanced by velvety texture and loads of supple tannins. Compelling and formidable, while remaining pure and true to its origin. From their Omahu Gravels and Twyford Gravels vineyards in the Gimblett Gravels district. At its best: 2018 to 2032.

97 Points - Bob Campbell

Dense and powerful Syrah with impressively rich flavours of chocolate, plum/dark berry, liquorice, cracked black pepper and spicy oak. I rate it slightly ahead of the more structured and highly celebrated wine from the 2013 vintage and I believe it will cellar at least as well despite being more accessible now.

Vidal Legacy Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Vidal Legacy Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Hawkes Bay A&P Wine Awards 2016 - Gold

98 Points - Bob Campbell

Very impressive Gimblett Gravels Cabernet Sauvignon with textbook varietal flavours of cedar/cigar box, cassis plus a subtle hint of fresh herbs and with a seasoning of very classy oak. This is a flagship wine that thoroughly justifies its exalted status. Should develop magnificently with bottle age.

19.0+ Points - Raymond Chan

Very dark, full black-red with purple hues, near impenetrable, a little lighter on the rim. This has a finely proportion nose, tightly concentrated and refined and detailed in expression showing a core of ripe black berried fruits alongside blackcurrant essence, cassis liqueur, lifted mint and herbal elements, pencil shaving and spicy oak and nuances of iron-earth. Medium-full bodied, the palate is well-presented with great depth, intensity and concentration of sweetly ripe, succulent fruit flavours of blackberries and blackcurrants. Layers of cassis, mint, herbs along with iron-earth and oak add complexing detail. This has a concentrated core with fine-grained tannin extraction providing drive and linearity. Refined acidity lends energy and freshness, and the wine carries to a long, lingering, tightly bound finish of black fruits with herbs, earth and oak nuances. This is an elegantly concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon with ripe blackberry, blackcurrant and cassis essence flavours on a very fine-grained, beautifully structured palate.

97 Points - Sam Kim, Wine Orbit

Legacy is an appropriate name for this exceptional wine. Classic, firm, expressive and engaging, and offers symphonic flavours and multi-layered texture. Aromas of cassis, Black Doris plum, cedar and cigar lead to a concentrated and densely weighted palate that is ripe, rounded and extremely long. The wine combines awesome fruit power and purity with elegant oak infusion and textural mouthfeel. This is destined for greatness. From their Omahu Gravels vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels district.
At its best: 2018 to 2032.

Vidal Legacy Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2013

Vidal Legacy Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2013

Hawkes Bay A&P Wine Awards 2016 - Gold

98 Points - Bob Campbell

This dense, rich and quite complex red is a top example from a top vintage. Warm, generous wine with ripe berry fruits, spice, tobacco leaf and a hint of chocolate/mocha character. Deliciously accessible now but with the power and density to develop well.

17.5 Points - Jancis Robinson

80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot aged for 19 months in French oak (50% new). Bright crimson. Pale rim. Very restrained but reasonably convincing nose with some salty depths. Very round and well composed. Refreshing and youthful with a particularly dry finish. Really quite subtle. Should age well and be very digestible. Not showy. Though there is a hint of some oak element.
