Gary Walsh, The Wine Front “That balance between finesse, fruit flavour and flinty struck match is just so spot on here. White peach, ripe lime, cashew and fine spicy oak. It’s juicy and intense, subtle honey and lemon curd richness, cool clean acidity, flinty and electric, light toasty oak and matchstick layering in complexity, and a very long spiced and lime drizzled finish. Beautiful wine, and for my tastes, pretty much in the zone now and over the next few years.”

Decanter Magazine “There are so many top-drawer Margaret River Chardonnays, they could have filled half this list on their own: Cullen’s Kevin John, Leeuwin’s Art Series, Voyager, Moss Wood, Thompson Estate, McHenry Hohnen... But I’ve picked Pierro, a personal favourite. It’s a powerful, weighty wine that can carry its mighty oak (24 months, 65% new), with fresh acidity to offset the opulent tropical fruit and buttery popcorn notes on the seductive palate.”

James Halliday "Classic Pierro chardonnay with its power and drive thanks to spicy sweet vanilla oak and creamy butterscotch flavours from lees stirring and mlf. Yet it's balanced and harmonised by neat acidity, grapefruit, white peach and some smoky sulphides."

Zalto Denk-Art Bordeaux Glass

The Zalto Bordeaux glass is recommended for weightier style reds, probably our most widely used glass when tasting in house, this glass is great for many different wines. The large bowl helping aerate and soften tannins whilst accentuating the wine's depth and concentration. The Bordeaux glass is the ideal choice for Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Zinfandel, Bordeaux or Rhône style blends and many other red wines. Surprisingly, it is also the glass of choice for oaked Chardonnay, the shape of the bowl accentuating the balance of ripe fruits and oak.

Pierro Chardonnay

Pierro Chardonnay is without question, a world-class wine and has won so many awards over the years. Moreover, it is well entrenched in the top three Chardonnays of Australia. Notwithstanding the above accolades, the highly respected American magazine Wine & Spirits voted the Pierro Chardonnay the best in Australia, which and if truth be known, does not come as a surprise to those in the know! Pierro Vineyard lies in the central Willyabrup sub region of Margaret River. The fully mature ‘Gin Gin’ clone Chardonnay vines are closely spaced which increases relative humidity. The vineyard is very stony; at night the heat radiates back into the clusters of Chardonnay effectively burning off excessive levels of malic acid. Low levels of malic acid in the Chardonnay fruit means that the complex aromas and flavours derive from malo-lactic fermentation do not smother fruit definition. The wine is vinified in Burgundian fashion with barrel fermentation in new French oak, lees stirring (bâttonage) and lees contact. Doctor Mike Peterkin is able to combine a fastidious attention to detail with a relaxed approach. Pierro Chardonnay possesses incredible intensity, generosity, complexity and concentration.

"The list of awards given to this tiny area in Australia’s most isolated region is endless and it’s no wonder that Margaret River is dominating Australia’s premium sector.."

Perched all the way over on Australia’s most south westerly tip is Margaret River. A region that accounts for less than 5% of Australia’s wine production but is responsible for 20% of the premium wines and the lion’s share of awards. Probably best known as the region that produces some of the new world’s finest Cabernet, Margaret River specialises not only in red and white, Bordeaux style wines but the region is also gaining a reputation for premium Chardonnays that rival some of the best found in Burgundy. Deep Woods have scooped up a multitude of awards across their range, including gold medals and a staggering 98 points awarded for their Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2017. Nocturne’s 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is receiving plenty of recognition and all but one of Flowstone’s wines have been awarded 95 points or above. The list of awards given to this tiny area in Australia’s most isolated region is endless and it’s no wonder that Margaret River is dominating Australia’s premium sector.
