The historic region of Provence sits along the Mediterranean coast of France and is blessed with the perfect climate for growing grapes. It is best known for the quality and quantity of rosé wines which account for over 80% of the regions wine production. Wine has been made in this region for over 2600 years and throughout the regions history wine-making and viticulture have been influenced by the cultures that have passed through – ancient Greeks, Romans and Gauls to name a few – and these cultures are responsible for introducing a large variety of grapes to the area. Provence has 8 major wine regions with AOC designations - the Côtes de Provence and the Coteaux d’Aix en Provence being the two main regions but other well-known regions are Cassis, Bandol, Bellet and Palette. The main grape varieties used in the region are Rolle, Ugni Blanc, Bourboulenc and Rhône varietals such as Clairette, Marsanne, Rousssanne and Grenache Blanc for white wines and Grenache Noir, Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan and Cinsault for red and rosé wine production.
