This wine is 87% Grenache and 13% Syrah from grapes grown at the Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard in the cool Edna Valley. A little over half of the Grenache was fermented with 33% whole clusters which adds a definite layer of spice and tannin and gives more complexity as the wine ages. All of the Grenache was aged in neutral French oak, on the lees for 17 months. The flavours follow in the same vein with the savoury fruit notes and well balanced alcohol.

Stuart McCloskey

Producer

Founder and Winemaker, Bob Lindquist chose the Santa Maria Valley in Santa Barbara County for the sole purpose of producing top quality, cool climate wines in 1982. No longer the sole owner Bob, was recently joined by Charles Banks of Screaming Eagle fame who has taken a majority stake in the winery via his company, Terroir Selections. Production is mainly dedicated to Rhone varietals such Mourvedre, Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier. Qupé’s wines are made at the Santa Maria Mesa, which is shared with his long-time friend, Jim Clendenen of Au Bon Climat. His wife, Louisa Sawyer Lindquist helps with sales. The Central Coast Syrah delivers good value as the winery’s entry-level red wine from a blend of eight sites in Santa Barbara and the Edna Valley. Perfumed and bursting with red fruit the influence of cool climate viticulture is clear from the lively acidity in the wine. Biodynamic farming comes into play at the Sawyer Lindquist vineyard, which was planted in 2005.  Cool morning and evening fog roll in off the Pacific Ocean to create a microclimate that preserves acidity in the grapes and help them to ripen slowly and evenly. These are uniquely Californian examples that resemble the finesse of the Rhone. Simply stunning wines!

Qupé Winery

Region

California is the largest and most important wine region in the US – in fact, if California were a separate country it would be the world’s fourth largest wine producer! California stretches along the west coast of the USA meaning that soils and climates vary enormously depending on the area’s altitude, latitude and proximity to the Pacific Ocean. Generally the cooler regions closer to the coast are most suited to the growing of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, whilst further inland (where the climate is much hotter) some of California’s most famous Cabernet Sauvignon wines are grown. The famous Ridge Estate is located here and produces some of the best and most sought after wines in California. If you enjoy Chardonnay, we highly recommend you take a look at Liquid Farm Winery, whose Chardonnay’s (we believe!) rival those of Burgundy.
