92 Points - Jay Miller (erobertparker.com)

The 2007 Shiraz Goose Yard Block is a glass-coating opaque purple color. It emits a splendid aromatic array of mineral, earth notes, espresso, Asian spices, plum, and blueberry. Not quite as rich as last year’s version because of the challenging vintage conditions, it is still a first-class Shiraz that will offer a drinking window extending from 2013 to 2022.

Producer

Consistently receiving the five star winery accolade from James Halliday, Schubert Estate is situated in one of the prime spots in the Barossa Valley, Roennfeldt Road, with Torbreck and Penfolds vineyards just next door. Steve and Celia Schubert run the estate today and have established their vineyards with a clear intention of working with, rather than against nature. The vineyards are carefully maintained using organic produce and the combination of soil, climate and a hands-on approach with the vines consistently produces fruit, and consequently wines of excellent quality.

Schubert Estate, Barossa Valley, South Australia

Region

Situated in South Australia, 60 kilometres northwest of Adelaide, lies the Barossa Valley which has been producing wine since 1842 and these days is recognised as Australia’s quintessential wine region. The hot climate mixed with the ironstone and sandstone soil in the valley, makes excellent growing conditions for grapes and in particular, Shiraz (or Syrah) which classically is full bodied with earthy and spicy notes. Over the last 15 years there has also been an increased interest in the other red Rhone varietals Grenache and Mourvedre. The non-irrigated old vineyards on the cooler west side of the valley are the most treasured and provide fruit for Australia’s most famous wine, Penfolds Grange among many other top-quality bottlings.
