96 Points - Stuart McCloskey “We revisit the Malakoff Vineyard which is owned and nurtured by Father and son viticultural team Robert and Cameron John. Robert explains that “each Shiraz clone exhibits its own characteristics at our vineyard, elegant, spicy characters for the PT23 [clone], softer rounder characters for the BVRC30 [clone], and high fruit intensity with a hint of black olive character for the Best’s old block clone. There is, however, an overarching inky spice character across each clone from our terroir that makes our vineyard unique.”

As expected, he’s spot-on with the inky characteristic – spice too. What I am drawn to is the unmistakable cooling, marine feel – sea kelp, salty ocean spray and fresh sage leaf. The nose (a touch reductive) provides a profusion of dusty, sweet spice along with white pepper and cedar. It feels a little broody. The palate is wonderfully fresh, bright and frisky with high notes of cranberry, raspberry, orange peel and graphite. Immensely spicy – perhaps, spiced fruit cake. This is wonderfully pure, long and shapely – freshness never fades. Delicious and a point of difference to lots of Aussie Shiraz. Drink now (decant for a few hours) to 2028. Served using Zalto Bordeaux glassware.”

Winemaker: Satsuma plums, and blackcurrant fruits explode onto the front palate. Pepper spices and cinnamon add further intrigue. Fine but firm tannins build through the palate leading to a crescendo of flavours that resonate with the drinker long after the wine has left ones lips. A full bodied wine with great length and depth.

Good colour, hue and depth; the bouquet has exotic spices that reshape themselves each time you return to the glass. Medium to full-bodied, it has an equally complex array of flavours before a savoury finish.

The Bordeaux glass is the ideal choice for Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Zinfandel, Bordeaux or Rhône style blends and many other red wines. Surprisingly, it is also the glass of choice for oaked Chardonnay, the shape of the bowl accentuating the balance of ripe fruits and oak.

Buy wines from Victoria, Australia

Despite being the second smallest state in Australia, Victoria is home to over 600 wineries, more than any other wine-producing state. However, Victoria does not produce the most wine, as rather than producing mass quantities of cheaper wine, its wineries tend to be smaller and more boutique in style. The cool climate here is produced by the coastal areas and this means that a wide range of wines can be made, from stunningly complex Chardonnay and delicate Pinot Noir in the Yarra Valley, to savoury and rich Shiraz from Heathcote and iconic fortified wines from Rutherglen.

Victoria is fast becoming one of our favourite regions with many new producers joining us from here, including Shadowfax, Mulline, and Eastern Peake.
