Single Block Wines

Single Block Wines

For many years, winemakers have been identifying specific sub-regions or single vineyards that have shown particular characteristic and qualities that set the wine apart from the others of that region. But the notion goes even further than identifying the whole vineyard and for a long time now, producers have been noticing that certain blocks from these vineyards have a tendency to produce grapes that even amongst vines in the same vineyard, show a certain uniqueness.

The reasons for these differences is due to the micro-climate within the vineyard. The micro-climate the specific conditions in and around the vines. There may be a subtle difference in the soil composition, if the vineyard is slightly undulating, the specific angle of a certain block might mean that it catches the very last rays of the evening sun or the very first of the mornings resulting in riper grapes of greater intensity. There may be a slight valley that channels gentle, cooling breezes through a certain block that in turn, produces grapes that show a particular freshness. There are almost an infinite number of circumstances that lead to a single block of vines showing these specific qualities, but the wines produced from them stand alone in a producers portfolio and often become their most awarded flagship wine. Kay Brothers produce their Block 6 wine from the original block of vines planted in 1892, several other producers also focus on blocks of their oldest vines such as St Hallett and Oliver Taranga. In Marlborough, Dog Point Vineyards create their stunning Section 94 and Two Hands produce an entire series of single block shiraz highlighting regional variations.
