91 Points - James Halliday
'One hundred per cent chardonnay, spending two years on tirage/yeast lees, the wine has abundant peachy fruit, indeed more than expected, even though it was early-picked. There won't be too many complaints about that flavour.'
Winemaker: The fruit was hand picked then whole‐bunch pressed, employing gentle pressing to extract only the pristine free run juice. The juice was then fermented in seasoned French oak, malo‐ lactic fermentation was completed and the wine remained in barrels on gross lees for 8 months. It was taken from barrel in October, blended, settled bright and then the liqueur de tirage added. The wine remained on lees in bottle for a further 12 months, before being disgorged in November, 2011. A special feature of the Stella Bella Blanc de Blancs is the larger than typical dosage at disgorgement. This dosage is taken from a blend of various aged chardonnay base wines and helps to add to the bready, creamy complexity of the wine.

Such is the excellence of all wines produced at this estate that in a blind taste test one would be forgiven for thinking it was Bordeaux. Set up by Stuart Pym more than 20 years ago, this outstanding boutique operation benefits from Margaret River’s maritime climate which is almost identical to south-western France’s premier red wine region. James Halliday frequently awards the property his coveted 5 star rating for excellence and the individual wines always shine in leading competitions such as the Decanter World Wine Awards and the International Wine Challenge. The range includes estate wines under the Stella Bella label, the Suckfizzle label from a single vineyard and the premium Luminosa label. Sourced from the 5 different vineyard areas owned by the Stella Bella, quality is always at the forefront of every bottle that leaves the wine winery. The Stella Bella estate wines are either varietal or traditional blends offering an affordable introduction to the styles they represent. These are the bulk of production and often sell out immediately upon release due to the excellent price quality ratio.
The Margaret River is situated in South Western Australia, about 200 kilometres south of Perth. This area may grow less than 5% of the country’s grapes but it produces a very significant proportion of the country’s best wine. The climate is Mediterranean, meaning that it is warm enough to make some brilliant Bordeaux blends and Cabernets, yet cool enough for elegant Chardonnays and Semillion. Margaret River is made up of mainly smaller, boutique producers with over 215 vineyards across the region. One of our favourite producers is from this region; Stella Bella wines. We can highly recommend Suckfizzle Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon which is made from grapes from a single small vineyard in Augusta, Suckfizzle.
