96 Points - Stuart McCloskey

Stonecroft, a small boutique winery, is home to the oldest Syrah vines in New Zealand. Their 2013 Reserve Syrah, already a sell-out back home, is simply stunning and contains fruit from the original planting in 1984. This is a very classy Syrah – The palate is dense, rich and dominated with savoury characteristics of black olive, leather and liquorice. Bob Campbell MW, the most important critic to listen to with regards to New Zealand wines, has awarded this wine 98/100 points and describes the 2013 as “Deep, dense, ripe Syrah that’s jam-packed with dried fruits/Christmas cake, spice/black pepper/anise, liquorice, and dark chocolate flavours. Firmly structured red with impressive cellaring potential. This is a very serious Syrah indeed from a great site, old vines and an outstanding vintage.

Producer

The Stonecroft winery was the first to be established in the Gimblett Gravels wine growing district in Hawke’s Bay and is home to the oldest Syrah vines in New Zealand. It was founded by Doctor Alan Limmer in the early 1980’s and it was he who planted New Zealand’s first commercially grown Syrah vines in 1984. Today, this small, boutique winery is owned and operated by Dermot McCollum and Andria Monin who purchased Stonecroft from Alan Limmer back in 2010.
The philosophy of the couple is to produce wines with a unique character which express the vineyards they are created from; wines which are intense, full-bodied, elegant and fruit-driven and have the ability to develop in the bottle. The hand-tended vineyards are certified organic and great care is taken to ensure the grapes are of high quality – low yields mean that the flavours are concentrated and this alongside the vineyards stony, gravel soils help Stonecroft to produce Syrah wines that rival those from the Northern Rhone.
