Signed by David Powell - Numbered 6, 23, 41, 60, 72 & 75
The only single vineyard wine from Torbreck, The Descendant was one of the Barossa’s co-fermented wines using Shiraz and Viognier. These vines were cuttings from RunRig vineyards and the wine is aged in ex RunRig barrels resulting in its name, The Descendant.
The 2005 is composed of 92% Shiraz and 8% Viognier and is sourced from young Run Rig cuttings. Glass-coating glycerine and a complex array of lavender, violets, blueberry and blackberry on the nose. The palate is full-bodied, concentrated with a noticeable uplift from the Viognier (and firm nod towards a great Hermitage). The purity and definition here is simply beautiful.
Although founder and former winemaker, Dave Powell is no longer associated with this label, Torbreck is still a force to be reckoned with; firmly entrenched in the upper echelons of Barossa Valley’s wine elite.
Taking its name from a forest in Inverness, Scotland, most of Torbreck’s production is dedicated to red wines using traditional Rhone varieties from estate grown fruit as well as those sourced from contract growers where all aspects of vineyard activities are under their control. Along with the celebrated RunRig, labels such as The Steading, The Struie, The Pict, Descendant and The Factor enjoy a very high reputation for consistency as well as longevity.
