Aged 22 months in 300 liter hogsheads (foudres), it represents Australia’s version of Châteauneuf du Pape. The 2002 The Steading’s big, spicy, earthy nose reveals notions of cherry liqueur, licorice, pepper, dried Provencal herbs, raspberries, and leather.

Aged 22 months in 300 liter hogsheads (foudres), it represents Australia’s version of Chateauneuf du Pape. The 2002 The Steading’s big, spicy, earthy nose reveals notions of cherry liqueur, licorice, pepper, dried Provencal herbs, raspberries, and leather. Ripe, medium to full-bodied, chewy, and heady, it is best drunk during its first 7-8 years of life, although it will last a lot longer.

Although founder and former winemaker, Dave Powell is no longer associated with this label, Torbreck is still a force to be reckoned with; firmly entrenched in the upper echelons of Barossa Valley’s wine elite.

Taking its name from a forest in Inverness, Scotland, most of Torbreck’s production is dedicated to red wines using traditional Rhone varieties from estate grown fruit as well as those sourced from contract growers where all aspects of vineyard activities are under their control. Along with the celebrated RunRig, labels such as The Steading, The Struie, The Pict, Descendant and The Factor enjoy a very high reputation for consistency as well as longevity.

Region

Situated in South Australia, 60 kilometres northwest of Adelaide, lies the Barossa Valley which has been producing wine since 1842 and these days is recognised as Australia’s quintessential wine region. The hot climate mixed with the ironstone and sandstone soil in the valley, makes excellent growing conditions for grapes and in particular, Shiraz (or Syrah) which classically is full bodied with earthy and spicy notes. Over the last 15 years there has also been an increased interest in the other red Rhone varietals Grenache and Mourvedre. The non-irrigated old vineyards on the cooler west side of the valley are the most treasured and provide fruit for Australia’s most famous wine, Penfolds Grange among many other top-quality bottlings.
