VINE AGE: 9-80 years
SOIL PROFILE: Quartz and gravelly loam over yellow clay & silty loam over deep yellow clay
Sourced from one of the highest vineyards on top of Menglers Hill, this quintessentially Eden Valley Shiraz has a soft bouquet of red fruits and fresh cut flowers with a moderately powerful fruit profile that finishes with an amazing minerality. Acidity is the true key to this wine. The elevation provides acidity retention and slight relief from weather extremes. Skeletal gravelly soils provide a fine boned mouth feel. Wildlife and gumtrees surround this vineyard, a natural inspiration for the colour of this label.
Peter Robinson "Dense, heady black current, blueberry and plum punch from the glass. The aromas are concentrated and tightly knit at first but after a little aeration, open up to reveal some sweet black cherry and violet. The concentration continues on the palate with youthful black berry fruits leading to sweet, clove spice that lingers on the finish. Although young, the tannins are ripe and provide perfect structure to the youthful fruits. This is the Eden Valley addition to the Garden series and when tasted next to the Barossa addition, had a comparative lightness but don’t be fooled, this wine still packs a punch."
Two Hands Wines have become a beacon for artisan, single vineyard Shiraz in Barossa Valley as well as other premier regions in South Australia. Winning admiration from leading critics around the globe such as Robert Parker, James Halliday and Jancis Robinson demonstrates that the wines are far from one-dimensional in their outstanding balance, structure and elegance. Further testament of this came in 2012 when the estate was named in Wine Spectator’s Top 100 for the 10th consecutive year.
Both from negociant fruit in McLaren Vale, The Lily’s Garden and Bella’s Garden Shiraz are single vineyards expression of Shiraz combining ripe black fruit wrapped in chocolate and smoky richness. Lily’s Garden is widely regarded as the more approachable of the two when young with Bella’s Garden having the staying power of a premium red Rhone, avoiding the often jammy character found in other examples from the region.
Taking things a notch higher is the Zippy’s Block 99% Shiraz from a prime Barossa single vineyard boasting immense power and intensity. The 2005 vintage was awarded an outstanding 99 points from critic Jay Miller with an estimated drinking window of 20-25 years. Also part of the estate holdings but managed separately is the Branson Coach House that was purchased in 2001. Here the deep clay soils aid the ripening of mostly Shiraz fruit grown in rare single vineyard sites. The Shiraz has rich fruit with spicy notes on the finish in a hedonistic yet controlled delivery.
Eden Valley is a wine making region sharing a boundary with the Barossa Valley and is dotted with the rolling hills of the Barossa Ranges. The Eden valley competes with the Clare Valley for the top-spot in high-quality Riesling production and the grapes thrive in the cool climate of the region. The other varietal that is important to this area is Shiraz and this is responsible for some of Eden Valley’s most highly acclaimed wines – the styles differ from those produced in south eastern Australia in that they have riper and smoother tannins and more ripe black fruit aromas with sweet spice notes. The wines are extremely well-balanced and both the reds and whites garner a great deal of complexity during the ageing process. One of our favourite producers from this region is the Henschke Estate and we have older vintages of both the Keyneton Estate and the Cyril available that show the red wines of Eden Valley at their best.
