Vidal Reserve Syrah 2014

Hawkes Bay
£14.95 per bottle
Only 10 in stock

This deeply coloured Syrah from the renowned Gimblett Gravels expresses aromas of dark red fruits, black pepper, spices and florals. Showing good fruit intensity, depth of flavour and length this wine is well balanced and supported by fine approachable tannins.

Vineyard: Fruit for this wine was sourced from our Omahu Gravels (94%) and Twyford Gravels (6%) vineyards situated in the heart of the acclaimed Gimblett Gravels grape growing district. Gimblett Gravels soils are made up of relatively recent alluvial deposits of gravel and varying degrees of silt and sand. Naturally free draining and low vigour soils, meticulous vineyard management and the outstanding 2014 syrah vintage produced grapes with intense varietal character with depth and clarity of flavor. Naturally low yields and “green harvesting” helped to produce fruit of concentration and richness, balanced with freshness of natural acidity, typical of our region and wines.

Winemaking: Individual vineyards parcels were harvested, destemmed, lightly crushed and fermented in small batches. During ferment the batches were gently hand plunged and pumped over the skins to extract desirable tannin, flavour and colour. The wines were then pressed off and run to French oak barrels where they completed Malolactic fermentation over spring. After resting in barrel for 15 months (20% new), the batches were lightly eggwhite fined, naturally settled, blended and filtered before bottling. Fragrant spice, dark red berry and floral notes combine on a balanced and textured palate.

Zalto Denk-Art Universal Glass

For richer, oaked Sauvignon Blancs such as The Fuder, white Graves or Semillon/Sauvignon blends. For young and non-vintage Champagne we recommend Zalto Universal. However, the Zalto Universal is a very good all-rounder, designed for all types of wines but may not maximize the potential of certain wine as much as the Bordeaux or Burgundy glass.

Vidal Estate based in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand was started in 1905 by Anthony Joseph Vidal, a young emigrant from Spain. He was one of the first winemakers to appreciate the area and see the potential it had for growing vines, this coupled with his sense of adventure, passion and creativity saw the beginning of something sensational. Today Vidal Estate who are still situated on the original plot in Hawkes Bay produce elegant wines using traditional techniques coupled with modern technology. They focus on strong regional characteristics which given the location, diverse landscape and high temperatures is nothing short of delicious.

Vidal wines have featured in our portfolio for several years and we have been delighted with the consistent quality. More recently, we sampled their 'Legacy' range, which and to be perfectly blunt, were simply amazing – Perhaps some of the best wines we have sampled out of New Zealand for a very long time. Their awards and pundit scores are justified but nevertheless, quite difficult to take in when you examine them all in detail. We have never seen so many consistently, high-scoring wines from one producer and are over the moon to add these to our portfolio. Vidal was also recently named 'Winery Of The Year 2017' by Raymond Chan which, is quite the achievement.
