Vina Errazuriz Seña 2013 Double Magnum

Aconcagua Valley

99 Points - James Suckling

Superb aromas of black currants, rose petal and mint. Lavender and stones too. Full body with incredible fruit density. Complex, yet it's agile and bright. Tannins are perfectly polished. It builds on the palate and shows the structure of a first growth Bordeaux but remains so Chilean. A blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Carménère, 12% Malbec, 10% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot. From biodynamically grown grapes. Even better than the amazing 2012.

The 2013 Seña might very well be their finest vintage to date. It has a subtle nose with aromas of red and black fruit denoting very good freshness, and the classical tobacco and cracked peppercorns, with the oak nicely integrated adding some spices and faint smoky aromas. The red fruit is remarkable and really adds freshness. Linear, juicy, sharp and long, very tasty and with very fine, slightly grainy tannins. There is superb balance, classical proportion and symmetry. I have not tasted all of the vintages of Seña (one day...), but out of all the years I've tried, this is certainly the best. I'm sure this will bloom in bottle and will have a long development.

Chilean prouder, Errázuriz has teamed up with Louis-Michel Liger-Belair, from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair in Burgundy’s Vosne-Romanée, who has been consultant winemaker for the new Pinot Noir, while the same region’s highly respected geologist, Françoise Vannier-Petit, has been brought in to create a detailed map of the Chilean estate’s soils. They have produced the first Chilean Grand Cru quality Burgundy, which have received huge scores and everyone is itching to get their fingers on some...

Just 280 cases of Las Pizarras Chardonnay have been produced from its inaugural 2014 vintage. The Pizarras Chardonnay was whole-bunch pressed, and fermented in a French oak barrels and small stainless steel tanks using native yeasts. 60% of the blend underwent malo-lactic fermentation and the wine has spent 14 months in 20% new French oak, with the rest aged in 1 year-old and three year-old French oak barrels. The first release of Las Pizarras Pinot Noir comprises 300 cases from the 2014 vintage. Las Pizarras was made in open-top fermenters, incorporating 20% whole clusters of Pinot Noir, using native yeasts. The wine was aged in French oak for 14 months, 50% of which was new. Although the quantity of new French oak might seem high, Louis-Michel Liger-Belaire suggested that amount, and he was right – it is very well integrated.
