Our Wine of the Week

Chanin Wines Sanford & Benedict Chardonnay 2014

99 points - Stuart McCloskey

"Almost a repeat of my introduction from the 2013 vintage - “In short, this is one of the most astonishing Chardonnays which I have enjoyed for many years”,  however the 2014 just eclipses the stunning 2013. A difficult wine to describe as superlatives do little, if any justice. Incredibly graceful, almost a weightless elegance, feminine, magnificently detailed bouquet which expresses minerality like no other US chardonnay. The palate is developing all the time with a core of minerality. Presently, this is a wine that is all about finesse and elegance, as flavours will develop with a little more bottle age. Utterly magnificent! (Please decant)."

The Man Behind The Label

The Chanin Wine Co has established a strong reputation for making some of the most beautiful, exciting and distinctive wines to come out of California in some time and considering it was only launched in 2007 it is hard to believe just how many awards and accolades it has received in such a short period. The winemaker and man behind the name is Gavin Chanin, who himself has received several accolades, including being named one of Forbes ’30 under 30’ in 2011.

His winemaking career began at 18, with harvest internships at the Au Bon Climat and Qupe wineries in Santa Barbara. At both labels he quickly earned the role of Assistant Winemaker under the expert tutelage of Jim Clenenden (at Au Bon Climat) and Bob Lindquest (at Qupe) and it is in Santa Barbara that he began crafting his own wines from Burgundian varietals, with fruit from some of the greatest vineyards in the area, including Bien Nacido and Sanford and Benedict.

Gavin’s philosophy is to create exciting wines, made in a pure and balanced style that reflect the individual vineyard in which they are grown, choosing grapes from old vines and picking them early in order to limit the wines alcohol levels and preserve the terroir of the wine. This he does beautifully, making wines of incredible finesse balanced with wonderfully rich flavours.

The Art of a Label

Gavin is not only an artist in the cellar, but he is also an award winning UCLA art graduate. Each wine has a piece of his own art on the label. You can also purchase his full-size painting on Gavin’s official website - http://chaninwine.com/art

Antonio Galloni “The only problem is finding the wines, as production is Burgundian scale, which is to say anywhere from 2-8 barrels for each of these wines. Readers who can find a few bottles won’t be disappointed, as the wines are truly magnificent.”

Chanin Wines Los Alamos Chardonnay 2015

Gavin Chanin's 2015 Chardonnay Los Alamos Vineyard captures a striking middle ground that expresses both the richness of the year and the focus that is possible from this site. As always, the flavors are bright and focused, but there is quite a bit of textural depth and richness. This is very nicely done.

Chanin Wines Sanford & Benedict Pinot Noir 2015

The 2015 Pinot Noir Sanford & Benedict Vineyard is bold and racy, but also shows a good bit of freshness. Dark cherry, plum, lavender, mint, violet and sweet spices are front and center. Pliant and ripe, but with good supporting energy, the 2015 is all about balance.

Chanin Wines Los Alamos Pinot Noir 2014

Plums, passion fruit, spring flowers and hints of violet all emerge from the silky, beautifully polished 2014 Pinot Noir Los Alamos Vineyard, which comes from very sandy soils located just outside of Los Alamos. It spent 12 months in a tiny 12% of new French oak. Medium-bodied and exceedingly elegant, with beautifully polished tannin, it should evolve nicely for a decade.

Chanin WinesBien Nacido Pinot Noir 2014

Chanin's 2014 Pinot Noir Bien Nacido Vineyard is silky and beautifully layered throughout. Sweet red berry fruit and floral notes are pushed forward. Rose petal, blood orange and white pepper develop in the glass, adding brightness and tension to the acid-driven finish. The 35% whole clusters are pretty much buried by the sheer luxuriousness of the fruit. Deceptively medium in body, the Bien Nacido Pinot has a level of intensity that sneaks up on the understated finish. This classy Pinot will drink well for at least a handful of years.

Chanin Wines Bien Nacido Chardonnay 2014

The 2014 Chardonnay Bien Nacido is all about precision, class and nuance. Even with all of the richness of the year coming through, the Bien Nacido retains superb precision and detail. The oily, waxy feel only adds to the wine's weight and overall texture. Chanin's Bien Nacido emerges from Chardonnay grafted onto Riesling rootstock that was originally planted in 1973 in the W-Block.
