Originally a single vineyard wine made from Shiraz and Malbec, Yellow Hammer Hill was created to supply restaurants with a wine that had all the hallmarks of Wild Duck Creek Estate. Since then, Yellow Hammer Hill has grown to be a blend of up to 10 different vineyards in the Heathcote region, and comprising predominately Shiraz, with varying volumes of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. It is a wine that is supremely complimentary to most food styles.
Winemakers notes on the 2016 vintage "Earliest harvest date on record with shiraz beginning to be harvested on February 9th. Although this was an early onset of vintage, everything viticulturally was early, with budburst, flowering, veraison and eventually harvested all being 2 weeks early. The 2015/16 growing season was extremely dry. We received about 1/2 of our average annual rainfall, which reduced yields from our already low levels, creating smaller berries with thicker skins, resulting in wines of intense structure, flavour and aroma."
Situated due North of Australia’s capital, Melbourne, the Heathcote region sits nestled between the Goulburn Valley and Bendigo region, in Central Victoria. Wine from this region stands out due to the perfect combination of warm climates and cool, southerly winds mixed with its ancient rich, red Cambrian soil. The region has become renowned in recent years for its Shiraz, which tends to be complex yet well-balanced. As well as Shiraz, the other red varieties such as Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon do well here, with whites such as Viognier and Chardonnay becoming increasing popular. From the Heathcote region, we have a selection of wine from two of its best wineries, Wild Duck Creek and Tatiarra.
