97 Points - James Halliday
"Four clones were planted ‘69, ‘81 and ‘84, making these vines (on average) some of the oldest in Australia. This is in classic Yarra Yering style: rich, powerful and complex, but doesn’t go over the top, its varietal expression plain for all to see, its length exceptional, its longevity likewise."
A mixed planting of 4 clones which was originally undertaken in 1969. The hand-picked fruit was gently destemmed directly to fermenters to retain as many whole berries as possible. A variety of techniques were employed to build perfume and complexity. Some with 20% whole bunches and some with stalks to contribute subtle structure. Aged for 9 months in French oak, 30% new with the balance 1, 2 and 3 year old.
Yarra Yering is one of the oldest and most beautiful vineyards in the Yarra Valley consisting of 28 hectares of vines located at the foot of the Warramate Hills. Established in 1969 by Dr Bailey Carrodus the 1973 vintage saw the production of the first vintage of Dry Red Wines – No’s 1 & 2. This saw Yarra Yering quickly gain an international reputation for quality and individuality.
