Winemaker "Light garnet hue with fruit aromas of wild strawberry, sweet cherry, and plum married with sage, wild thyme and a touch of cedar. The vibrant fruit, savoury notes and intriguing spice, layer wonderfully with the silky fine tannins and creamy texture highlighted by a fresh acidity that gives the wine tremendous energy. The cooler growing season saw a late April/early May harvest resulting in a beautifully fragrant wine with delicate fine tannins and exciting aromatics that are a true reflection of the Waitaki. A wine that is a touch exotic, lithe and exceptionally enjoyable upon release and will benefit from up to 8 years in the cellar. A real gem for those who love Waitaki Pinots!"

Zalto Denk-Art Burgundy Glass
For all Pinot Noirs we recommend the Zalto Burgundy glass, designed almost specifically for Pinot’s delicate aromas. The aromas of Pinot Noir are often the most delicate, but when revealed can be the most enticing and pretty. The Zalto Burgundy glass is the widest of all the Zalto glasses providing the largest surface area of wine. This allows for rapid aeration, revealing all of Pinot Noir’s delicate spice, herb, floral, earth and berry aromas to be maximized. The narrower rim holding these aromas for an unparalleled experience of Pinot Noir’s elegant subtleties. Zalto Burgundy is also very good for Nebbiolo, especially Barolo.

Grant Taylor is as important to New Zealand winemaking as Freddie Mercury was to the music industry. Grant has produced the first vintages for many of the region’s most reputable wineries including Felton Road, Mt Difficulty, Bald Hills, Mount Edward, Carrick, Hawkshead, Mondillo, Perrigrine, Rockburn (aka Hay’s Lake). His accomplishments also include winning the Best Pinot Noir Trophy at the International Wine Competition an unprecedented three times – a feat achieved by no other winemaker in the world…
Since 1998 Grant has been the winemaker at one of New Zealand’s undisputed super-stars, Valli Vineyards, which has enjoyed an unparalleled level of success. Many believe (as we firmly do) Valli Vineyards produce consistently better wines than Felton Road. We acknowledge Felton Road enjoys the No:1 position however, many believe this is purely down to marketing and previous successes.
The aim at Valli is to produce single vineyard wines, which express their unique character of each Otago sub-region with clarity and absolute purity. Four distinctive Pinot Noirs are bottled under the following labels - Gibbston, Bannockburn, Bendigo and the newest on the map, Waitaki. Whilst we eagerly await Grant’s new releases, we managed to secure the remaining parcels of the superb 2014’s.
Central Otago is a beautiful and powerful place situated on the South Island of New Zealand with land dominated by rivers and mountains and shaped by glaciers. Part of the Otago region, the climate here goes from one extreme to the other and is the coldest yet driest part of the country which allows for a deep concentration of fruit flavours in the grapes. In this region vines are planted in desert conditions, however the plethora of rivers running through make it ideal for vineyard irrigation. It’s New Zealands most famous region for pinot noir, located inland, and home to some of the world’s most southerly vineyards, Central Otago’s climate enjoys some continentality at its highest vineyards with very cold nights helping to preserve essential freshness in the grapes. Akitu’s vineyards are some of New Zealands highest altitude, Akitu literally being the Mauri translation for the word summit. Central Otago has several well-known sub-regions including Bannockburn, the warmest part of the region and home to Felton Road who create several single vineyard expressions of pinot noir. Valli Vineyards are owned by winemaker Garant Taylor, a man who has been an instrumental part of Central Otago’s wine industry since its very beginning. Valli produce four distinct pinot noirs, each from a different sub-region, Gibbston, Bannockburn, Bendigo and Waitaki, highlighting the unique differences between each of their character.
