In five years, and over £1 million in sales, we have never received a negative word from any buyer (quite the opposite, in fact). Corked wine – I believe one bottle, but we were unable to verify the claim. Thursday night, Erin Larkin (writing for Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate) released her views on the four 2021 cuvees. By Friday morning, my inbox was filled with requests from the UK wine trade wanting an allocation. One had declined their initial allocation based on the lack of ‘critical acclaim’ – now they would like it. It’s such a shame that some merchants are unable to offer wines to their clients without a score from one of the many critics, but there you go… Moreover, and prior to Erin’s arrival at Parker.com (2022) they would have never purchased Standish based on her views, which are always passionate and accurate. It really poses many questions – Is the publication more important than the reviewer? Do we even care who the reviewer is? Is it the score or the tasting note? Have we reached a point where, and regardless of the communicator, and how is tastes, it all comes down to a number… What do you all think? Since the beginning, we have launched every Standish release months ahead of the global launch and before the press sample the collection. I stated that The Schubert Theorem was my favourite, an opinion shared by both Erin and Gary Walsh of The Wine Front. Gary wrote…
In the past few weeks, we’ve seen lots of new, global releases. The new 2018 Henschke collection which, and given their high cost(s), received mixed reviews – Erin awarded Hill of Grace 98 points which can be purchased for £3,000 a six pack. The famous Mount Edelstone Vineyard Shiraz received 96 points and costs £750 a case of six (under bond). Clearly the connection to Lamella is close (Lamella is crafted with fruit from the Stuart Angas family vineyard. The vineyard was planted with cuttings from the Mt Edelstone). Equally, from Torbreck’s collection, former employers of Dan... How about the 99-point 2018 Laird for £2,500 per six pack or a six pack of the 2020 Runrig for £960.00 (97+ points). You can buy a case of 2020 Standish the Relic (99 points) for £425.00. Across the pond and being released as I type – we have this years' Bordeaux En-Primeur campaign. Cheval Blanc at £5,760 per 12-pack (William Kelly of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate awarded 97/99+). Alternatively, Château Angelus for £4,296 (96/98 from Mr Kelly). I could go on with thousands of comparisons, but you get my gist… *All scores quoted are from the same publication – consistency being key as it’s easy to cherry pick. Clearly, we are left with a conundrum. That being, either too many wines are overpriced, or The Standish Wine Company are woefully under-priced… I would urge you to take twenty-minutes and watch Erin’s YouTube ’21 Standish launch after all, this is how Erin started voicing her opinion of Dan’s wines I get it – scores are important however, enjoy reading the tasting notes, as I know many of you do. Vinorium Customer Pricing All trade buyers have been asked to respect the full RRP @ £450.00 IB per case of six. Likewise, they are allocated the wines on a 1:1 case basis – One case of Lamella to every case of The Standish et cetera. How they offer the wine is up to them… For a short period (this offer is only valid until 9:00am Wednesday), we have reverted most wines back to their pre-arrival prices as we would like Vinorium customers to hoover-up before the trade commence. ’21 Schubert Theorem is being offered at the full RRP. Buy it with The Standish for £750.00 a saving of £150.00 Cheers, Special offer pricing will end Wednesday 17th May at 9.00amThe 2021 Standish Collection" I cannot recall seeing it so balanced and poised on release...a wine of definition and untold potential. Super."Lamella 202198+ Points - Erin Larkin “The 2021 Lamella Shiraz is made with fruit from the Angas family vineyard, Hutton Vale Farm, Eden Valley. The vineyard was planted with cuttings from the Mt Edelstone (Henschke) vineyard and represents the final pick of the season each year. Made with 100% whole bunches in the ferment, the wine opens with characteristic jasmine tea, bergamot, raspberry, graphite and star anise on the nose. The whole-bunch component, far from overtaking the fruit, is seamlessly integrated from the first instance this year. The wine is a cohesive whole and shows an elegance and presence that is beguiling, to say the least. If anything, the 2021 Lamella is full of aching potential; its future is writ upon the balance of fruit and skin/stalk tannin, freshness and density. For lovers of this cuvée, I cannot recall seeing it so balanced and poised on release. The 2018 (a vintage I reference constantly for its high quality and fruit presence) may challenge this statement, however the cool vintage that birthed the Lamella this year has produced a wine of definition and untold potential. Super.” 98-99 Points – Stuart McCloskey “In this case, the bouquet continues to be elusive and smoulders rather than leaps out. Compote-like, blue and black fruits, violet, overlayed with fresh pencil shavings, iodine, sea kelp, espresso, cooling steel, graphite, minerals, bergamot and peppermint oil. An intoxicating, heady fusion. The palate is incredibly dense (almost off the scale) – virtually chewable. Solid tannins frame the pure, ripe fruits. The palate feel is the archetypal ‘iron fist in a velvet glove.’ Sensual, powerful, tightly coiled and statuesque. With lots of aeration the wine’s rhythm unfolds to its own, wonderful tune. The flavour profile is extraordinarily pure – the core of fruit is off the scale. This is the perfect example of a wine that fans out and deepens to more notes of pastille fruits, blueberry compote and florals. An unremitting finish finally brings this great wine to a close. This will take at least a decade to develop and this is the reason my score errs on the modest side. Don’t let this put you off as this will ultimately be another magnificent ’21. Today, it’s reserved and it shows… Lamella 2021 and The Standish 2021£750.00 IB for 12 bottles Contains: 6 x 75cl 2021 Lamella and 6 x 75cl 2021 The Standish The price will increase Wednesday 17 May at 9.00am "A thrilling Schubert this year, it's like a strike of lightning on a dark night."The Schubert Theorem 202199 Points - Erin Larkin “The 2021 The Schubert Theorem Shiraz was made with fruit from the Roennenfeldt Road vineyard, in Marananga, with 70% whole bunches in the ferment. The northeastern corner of this vineyard is matured in concrete egg to preserve the blue-fruited core that defines the style of this wine; it is the only cuvée that features an alternate maturation vessel. I knew (before and) when I tasted the 2019 and 2020 vintages what I was going to get, by and large. When I was in the Barossa in June 2021, I was already thinking about what the Schubert would look like from this year, as the perceived fit of season and style had the potential to dovetail in a most titillating fashion—a "stars aligning" kind of thing. A cool season overlays a warm site capable of producing dark, dense, sometimes brooding, always pure Shiraz. The combination of concrete egg (and, in this case, a slightly shorter maturation in this vessel) and cooler year has produced a wine of scintillating precision and fruit sweetness. It glows with its own black light. It shimmers and oscillates between fruit luminescence and plush tannic texture, and in doing so, it barely contains its own energy and abundance. The distinction between this profusion of fruit and the old "fruit bombs" of yore is the precision of acid and pliable fruit tannin that defines the middle palate and the ability of the fruit (courtesy of the winemaking) to shine through the vessels in which it matured. The tannin that shapes the wine is plentiful, make no mistake, yet it is ductile and fine and threads through every aspect of the palate. A thrilling Schubert this year, it's like a strike of lightning on a dark night. This wine appeals most fervently to my penchant for freshness, energy and resonant bass line." 99-100 Points – Stuart McCloskey “Another monumental offering and perhaps the most seductive on the nose. Blackcurrant pastille, blueberry compote, crème de mûre, cassis, black liquorice, brined, black olives, exotic, sweet spice, anise, espresso, hot earth, smoke, warmed oyster shell, nori and graphite. Quite an extensive list however, this tips the iceberg as I could easily spend a day with the bouquet alone. Unbelievably dark and brooding on the palate. Powerful, muscular and alive with sun-drenched blue and black fruits whilst being tempered by cooling steel, warm earth and sweet Asian spice. This exudes quality and magnificence – it really does. Not one facet of the palate escapes the sumptuousness which radiates in silken waves. The fine-grained tannins provide shape and structure as does the crisp acidity. There’s an obvious nod towards minerality. The exoticism is particularly alluring as is the effortless nature. A magnificent wine – truly so…” £450.00 IB per case (6x75cl) The Schubert Theorem 2021 and The Standish 2021£750.00 IB for 12 bottles Contains: 6 x 75cl 2021 Schubert Theorem and 6 x 75cl 2021 The Standish The price will increase Wednesday 17 May at 9.00am "The Standish Shiraz is finer, prettier and lighter than I have ever seen it at this stage of its life."Standish The Standish 202196 Points - Erin Larkin "The 2021 The Standish Shiraz was made with fruit from the Laycock family vineyard, Greenock, with 30% whole bunches in the ferment. The Standish Shiraz was the first cuvée launched by Dan Standish in 1999, and the wine is routinely typified by its muscular tannin shape and earthy, savory fruit. The most attractive part of this wine is the splay of exotic market spice (namely sumac, black pepper, star anise and fresh cardamom) that sails in on the coattails of the red/purple fruit. It has all the exoticism and romance of a hike through the mountains of Morocco, yet it, perhaps more than any other wine in the collection, speaks of the Barossa in a clear enunciated voice. So, where does it fit in 2021? The 2021 The Standish Shiraz is finer, prettier and lighter than I have ever seen it at this stage of its life. It has all the spice and Barossan identity that is expected; however, it misses the dense baritone of fruit that is present in earlier iterations. Whether you think that is a positive or not is up to you—I am fond of this wine throughout all its incarnations. Vintage variation is responsible for the spark of curiosity and joy that I experience every year during this release, and the real triumph in 2021 is the ability of the vineyard (this vineyard) to shine through the season that shaped it." 98-99 Points – Stuart McCloskey “Dare I say it – even more aloof than Lamella. Nonetheless, mesmerising it is. In fact, I know of no other Aussie producer who conjures such thought-provoking aromas. I hate to use the term ‘intellectual’ however, it’s the correct word used in the correct context. Pinning aromatics down to deep aromas of Indian ink, graphite, cold steel, black liquorice and scorched spices. All aromas are wrapped in a salty brine casing – wonderfully marine. The palate treads the same, high-altitude path (you’ve got to work at it). The sweet entry is welcome relief before you are met with the solid structure – very muscular and super-dense. The palate interplays between deep, dark, blue and black pastille fruits – a little concentrated raspberry along with its tell-tale savoury style which is a prominent feature this year. The wine continues to flow harmoniously with crème de mûre, mulberry, violet, lavender, Indian ink. Similarly, to the 2020, there’s a noticeable briny, minéralité tone to all the fruit. Lots of succulence too along with a rich lacquer-feel. This will deliver decades of pleasure. For now, set-aside for at least 8-10 years.” £375.00 IB per case "This is undoubtedly the biggest, most plush wine in the collection, but true to form for Standish, it is balanced and fresh."The Relic 202198 Points - Erin Larkin “The 2021 The Relic Shiraz-Viognier is made with fruit from the Hongell family vineyard, Krondorf. It was made with 1% Viognier co-fermented, with 25% whole bunches in the ferment this year, up from 15% to 20% in 2020. The Relic is one of Australia’s greatest Shiraz Viognier wines, and it’s a sure thing each year for quality and execution of style. In 2020, it was my preferred wine of the collection for its savory, meaty/bacon fat/bloody character. All elements were in balance, and it managed a savory and floral drive within the same glass. Super cool. This year, I love the wine for all the opposite reasons. The 2021 is creamy, plush and almost sybaritic in its outlay of fruit and tannin. At 15.5% alcohol, it's the highest alcohol wine in the 2021 release, yet it doesn’t show that via warmth or harshness in the wine. The whole-bunch component is up slightly this year from last, and honestly, it feels completely invisible in the wine. This is undoubtedly the biggest, most plush wine in the collection, but true to form for Standish, it is balanced and fresh, with a long future in front of it.” 99-100 Points – Stuart McCloskey “I find the bouquet astonishing. Let’s be honest, they all are however, the ’21 Relic has been dialled up a notch. Florals aplenty along with metal shavings, nori, fennel seed, preserved mulberry jam, blueberry compote, cassis, dark chocolate, new leather, violet, sweet anise and pencil shavings. The flavours keep building – this wine doesn’t stop giving. Expansive, layered, incredibly deep, seamless and immensely concentrated. Mediterranean herbs influence and positively. The tannins provide structure and infuse with the super-concentrated fruit. The sweet spice is a dreamlike addition. Simplistically, imagine a bowl of confit fruit – blueberry, mulberry, plum and blackberry infused with star anise, cinnamon stick, clove, lavender, fresh vanilla, zest from blood orange and a soupçon of soy. Add quality, fine-grained tannins and fantastically crisp acidity and you’re left with a testament to the greatness of Australian winemaking.” £375.00 IB per case * Please note The Relic 2021 has an abv of 15.5% which attracts a higher level of UK duty; hence the slightly higher DP price per case. 2021 - Special Four PackOnly available duty paid 1 x 2021 Standish Lamella Four Pack Offer Price @ £315.90 The price will increase Wednesday 17 May at 9.00am Critical acclaim has been nothing short of astonishing – here’s a little flavour of the excellence and consistency:Robert Parker.com Lamella (98+ points 2021 / 97+ points 2020 / 98-100 points 2018 / 98 points 2017 / 99 points 2016) The Standish (96 points 2021 / 96 points 2020 / 98-100 points 2018 / 96 points 2017 / 99 points 2016) The Schubert Theorem (99 points 2021 / 98 points 2020 / 96-98 points 2018 / 96 points 2017 / 98 points 2016) The Relic (98 points 2021 / 99 points 2020 / 96-99 points 2018 / 97 points 2017 / 99 points 2016) James Suckling.com Lamella (98 points 2020 / 97 points 2019 / 2018 / 2017) The Standish (98 points 2020 / 2019 / 2018) The Schubert Theorem (99 points 2020 / 2019 / 100 points 2018) The Relic (99 points 2020) Delivery / transfer / storage fees Delivery: We plan to ship tranche one shortly with an ETA into the UK late August/September.
