97+ Points - Stuart McCloskey - “A very stylish / highly accomplished wine. Super-neat and tidy. The nose develops with aeration (my advice is not to serve it too cold) with pear, citrus oil and an entire array of white flowers – just a little spice in the background from a rasp of fresh nutmeg. The palate is gloriously fine, satiny in texture and provides layers of lip-smacking citrus along with waves of minerals - salinity / sea spray on the super-long, expansive finish. More tightly wound than the previous two releases which is by no means a negative. The ’19 is a superb effort that will reward time in your cellar (up to ten years). For best results, tuck it away for a year or two as this will allow some of the tension to relax. Served using Zalto Bordeaux glassware”

97-98 Points - Magdalena Sienkiewicz - “Captivating purity, perhaps a little subdued at first but the wine develops in the glass with every minute. You are clearly in the presence of a serious Chardonnay. Hallmark aromas of lemon oil, flint and oyster shell are lifted with elegant floral notes, pears and white peaches. Clearly, this is a young, fledgling wine, but nevertheless, it shows striking balance and depth. The palate is tensile yet confident with limes, grapefruit and orchard fruit framed in richly mineral tones. Assertive acidity creates much tension on the palate while subtle cashew creaminess and spice add extra layers of texture. Impressive measure and balance, its multi-layered structure extends to a long finish. All elements suggest perfect grounds for further development. Give it 5-10 years in the cellar and watch it flourish. Sampled using Zalto Bordeaux glassware, which often brings out more savoury notes I find”.

Zalto Denk-Art Bordeaux Glass

Due to further lockdowns in Austria we are experiencing extended delays with our Zalto orders.

The Zalto Bordeaux glass is recommended for weightier style reds, probably our most widely used glass when tasting in house, this glass is great for many different wines. The large bowl helping aerate and soften tannins whilst accentuating the wine's depth and concentration. The Bordeaux glass is the ideal choice for Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Zinfandel, Bordeaux or Rhône style blends and many other red wines. Surprisingly, it is also the glass of choice for oaked Chardonnay, the shape of the bowl accentuating the balance of ripe fruits and oak.

Perched on a ridge, surrounded by stunning scenery and woodlands of indigenous Jarrah and Marris trees, Deep Woods Estate began life in 1987 but their reputation as one of Margaret Rivers leading wineries began to grow after they were acquired by the Fogarty family in 2005.

They are now lead by one of Australia’s most talented winemakers and James Halliday’s winemaker of the year 2019, Julian Langworthy who joined the team in 2011 and since then, They have accumulated a seemingly endless list of accolades and awards. These includes a staggering 99 points awarded by James Halliday and a fistful of Gold Medals for their Reserve Cabernet 2016 and 98 points accompanied by even more Gold Medals for their Reserve Chardonnay 2017. Deep Woods are now considered to be one of the most exciting and respected wineries in Margaret River who cannot seem to put a foot wrong, winning equal acclaim from critics and us alike.

Deep Woods Estate wines definitely stand out from the crowd, although we had struggled to source their stunning wines as they are simply rarely available to the outside world – the majority of bottles are scooped up at the cellar door or sold through their domestic mailing list. But, we tried and tried until we received a small parcel, which we are delighted to share with you all. Deep Woods Estate is now firmly fixed in our portfolio of great Australian wines and we are so thrilled to be in a position to offer an annual allocation.

Perched all the way over on Australia’s most south westerly tip is Margaret River. A region that accounts for less than 5% of Australia’s wine production but is responsible for 20% of the premium wines and the lion’s share of awards. Probably best known as the region that produces some of the new world’s finest Cabernet, Margaret River specialises not only in red and white, Bordeaux style wines but the region is also gaining a reputation for premium Chardonnays that rival some of the best found in Burgundy. Deep Woods have scooped up a multitude of awards across their range, including gold medals and a staggering 98 points awarded for their Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2017. Nocturne’s 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is receiving plenty of recognition and all but one of Flowstone’s wines have been awarded 95 points or above. The list of awards given to this tiny area in Australia’s most isolated region is endless and it’s no wonder that Margaret River is dominating Australia’s premium sector.
