Score: 92 - 94

A 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc blend from the Plateau of Pomerol near the church, the wine has an inky/purple color, a sweet kiss of mulberry and black cherry liqueurs, interwoven with licorice, truffle, a hint of melted road tar and background spice and oak. The wine is opulent, medium to full-bodied and unquestionably a tour de force for this vintage. Kudos to Durantou. If you can find it, this is clearly one of the candidates for the wine of the vintage and a real star. Drink from 2018-2027.

It's no surprise that perfectionist/meticulous proprietor Denis Durantou has turned out one of the best wines of the vintage. Harvested September 27-October 6, only 10,000 bottles were produced in this tiny yielding vintage that also required a draconian-like selection process to keep the best fruit under the top label.

Producer

Château L’Eglise Clinet has a rich history and sits in the Pomerol appellation on exceptional terroir, close to the infamous Château Petrus. Denis Durantou, (owner and winemaker) is the star of the château and has been at the helm of this estate since 1983, with his family owning the property since 1914. He has brought a whole host of ideas and innovation along with his skills and expertise to make Château L’Eglise Clinet one of the best estates in Pomerol today, creating rich, full bodied wines, with beautiful balance and harmony. The vineyards are planted with 85% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 1% Malbec with many of these vines being over 75 years old.

Château L'Eglise Clinet

Region

Bordeaux is not only the most famous wine producing region in France but in the world, with the most prestigious châteaux and wines in the industry. Its history dates back to the Roman times and today is the largest producing region of fine wines. Vineyards in Bordeaux are known by châteaux and therefore the name of each individual château is an important brand.

Many top wines are sold ‘En Primeur’ meaning that they are sold in the barrel prior to bottling. Almost 90% of the wine produced in Bordeaux is red (called ‘Claret’ in the UK) from over 8,500 producers. The main reason for the success of the wine production in Bordeaux is the perfect combination of climate, with long hours of sunshine ideal for ripening the grapes and well-draining gravel soil. Appellations are an important part of the Bordeaux culture and the region has 54 appellations recognized by the AOC, the Appellation d’Origine Controlle.
