92 Points - Neal Martin

The 2015 Montlandrie was precocious out of barrel but now it has learned some manners and blossomed into a more refined and sophisticated Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux, the 45% new oak beautifully assimilated. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, perfectly pitched acidity, a little savory and dried blood surfacing toward the finish to complete a glorious wine that fulfills its promise from barrel. I suspect this will be longer lasting than many will allow it. Anticipated maturity: 2019 – 2035.

Producer

Château Montlandrie is situated in Cotes de Castillon and is owned by the brilliant Denis Durantou, owner of Châteu L’Eglise Clinet in Pomerol as well as vines with Château Saintayme, Château Cruzelles and Château Chenade - who purchased the property in 2009.  The vineyards are planted with a majority of Merlot (65%) then Cabernet Franc (20%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (15%) however Cabernet Sauvignon has only been used since the 2013 vintage.

Region

Bordeaux is not only the most famous wine producing region in France but in the world, with the most prestigious châteaux and wines in the industry. Its history dates back to the Roman times and today is the largest producing region of fine wines. Vineyards in Bordeaux are known by châteaux and therefore the name of each individual château is an important brand.

Many top wines are sold ‘En Primeur’ meaning that they are sold in the barrel prior to bottling. Almost 90% of the wine produced in Bordeaux is red (called ‘Claret’ in the UK) from over 8,500 producers. The main reason for the success of the wine production in Bordeaux is the perfect combination of climate, with long hours of sunshine ideal for ripening the grapes and well-draining gravel soil. Appellations are an important part of the Bordeaux culture and the region has 54 appellations recognized by the AOC, the Appellation d’Origine Controlle.
