Stuart McCloskey "The nervous anticipation. Is the ’22 Aylesbury as good as the double-sellout ’21? Our original sample impressed however, it had only just been bottled prior to air-freighting for the team and I to sample, which showed in the wine, and reason why we went back and purchased their remaining ’21. Two-years later, this has transformed and knitted together beautifully.
The bouquet is a dreamy infusion of black cherry, cinnamon, Campari, blood orange, bags of red fruits, anise, rose petal, along with sweet spice and toasty warmth. The palate is silky, seamless, and perfectly combines fruit richness, sweet spice with a sense of weightlessness – very impressive indeed. This is epically long and fans out wonderfully. Spend time and enjoy how the wine twists and turns (both texturally and through the flavour profile). The myriad of flavours match the bouquet - black cherry, cinnamon, Campari-like herbs, blood orange, bags of red fruits and anise. This slowly drives off into the distance with a streak of earth and sweet spice. Super fresh and coiled. This will take longer to come around compared to the 2021. Nonetheless, she is utterly gorgeous, but a few more years in the cellar will make this blossom into a real beauty. I sampled this at 8:30am which not only shows my dedication, but how delectable she is too… This took the place of my second cup of tea which rarely happens! Served using Zalto Burgundy stemware. Drink now to 2030. No need to decant. Simply, sit with the wine, swirl away and enjoy the heady aromatics. Highly recommended is an understatement…"
Located in the Ferguson Valley within the Geographe wine region, the Aylesbury Estate property is home to a 200 strong Angus beef breeding herd, complimented with vineyard plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and most recently, Vermentino. This fruit is used in the Pater Series, QO5 and Waterfall Gully ranges. Since 2018, they expanded their property to include the highly awarded 52 Stones Vineyard, where they grow Chardonnay, Arneis and Gamay.
The Ferguson Valley climate is similar to Western Europe – with the Douro Valley of Portugal being the most alike. Cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers provide the perfect conditions for grape-growing. The native Australian forests surrounding the property provide pure, clean water for the vines throughout summer. This pristine environment is incredibly well suited to the production of high-quality grapes, which in turn helps Aylesbury Estate to create beautifully complex and balanced wines.
Put simply, these wines are wonderful. Their Gamay is, by far, the best Aussie example we have ever sampled and more akin to Pinot Noir than Gamay. That said, ... Read more Read less
