We give a warm welcome to our newest member of The Vinorium family, Fermoy Estate, a super-premium winery nestled in the beautiful region of Wilyabrup, the 'jewel in the crown’ of the famous wine making region of Margaret River. If truth be told, this announcement has taken almost three years to share and came very close to being parked indefinitely. The original set of samples impressed hugely however, export pricing across their range were too high to consider. Years passed without communication until I received an email in June sharing the following news, “I thought I'd get in touch following our wonderful news from London overnight: our 2020 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon has won 'Best in Show' at the 2024 Decanter World Wine Awards. Please find attached the media release. This follows success at the 2021 DWWA with a Best in Show award for our 2019 Reserve Chardonnay. It seems there is something special in these Margaret River soils. I am exploring export opportunities and am very interested in hearing your thoughts on the possibility of distributing Fermoy Estate in the UK.” I provided a congratulatory response followed by the bombshell news of wine life in the UK. Nonetheless, and much kudos to Dave (their sales and assistant General Manager) who was a determined bugger to put it mildly, put a dozen samples on the plane and waited for my response. Again, I did not argue with the quality. The Reserve Cabernet Sauvignons (I sampled six vintages) were tremendous and comfortably justify their domestic price tag of $99. Actually, and by the way pricing is going in Australia, these are starting to look a tad undervalued. Understandably, Fermoy have worked hard for all their awards (they are winners of most major national and international competitions, and repeatedly). Accordingly, export pricing must reflect their achievements, which I find totally acceptable, if it were not for the war in Ukraine, and good old Liz for crashing our economy etcetera… Without sounding rude to the Fermoy team – no award (albeit a rather special one) will budge me on pricing. I believe three-months passed until we finally came to an agreement earlier this month. Each side respecting one another and more importantly, providing the foundations for a long-term relationship. So, here we are… We bring to you, three exceptional wines that have proven time-after-time, they are some of the best on the world stage. Of course, this includes the 2020 Reserve Cabernet which won the prestigious Best in Show at the 2024 Decanter World Wine Awards. Take it from me, the Decanter World Wine Awards is regarded as the world’s largest and most influential wine competition, full stop. The Vinorium has been voted Decanter's Best Australian Specialist for six years running (sadly, no competition for ’24) which has placed us on the global map. I kid you not, we receive at least half a dozen emails per month from Aussie producers wishing to be represented by us… Times need to change and reason for our cautious, commercial approach. Receiving Decanter’s ‘Best in Show’ is the pinnacle, awarded to the top fifty (0.27%) wines of the show. Remember there are 18,000 entries from across the world. Please take a few minutes to view the Decanter video – you’ll understand the magnitude… Video will open in a new tab The judges’ comments: "Do Cabernet Sauvignon and Margaret River go together? Well, it’s the fourth time that the combination has been featured in our Best In Show selection – so yes, they do. Three of those laureates, intriguingly, have come from the high-quality, low-quantity 2020 vintage – and if this wine is anything to go by, it’s a vintage which is taking its time to reach even early maturity. This wine remains an opaque black-red in colour, with admirably pure and restrained aromas of shapely blackcurrant lent freshening complexity by bush and scrub notes – a single sniff is transporting. The wine is concentrated and refined on the palate. Not merely fruity, though there is plenty of that ‘noble’ blackcurrant to enjoy, but the fruit is lent shade and nuance by the biotope allusions evident on the nose. The tannins and acids are measured and proportionate; the ripeness well-judged; and the wine moves through the mouth with easy, drinkable grace.” 2020 Fermoy Estate Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Best in Show, 2024 Decanter World Wine Awards 2019 Fermoy Estate Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Best Cabernet Trophy at 2022 Royal Sydney Wine Show Best Margaret River Cabernet Trophy at 2021 Halliday Cabernet Challenge Additional 6x Gold Medals at various major Australian wine shows 2018 Fermoy Estate Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (current vintage available now) Gold at the 2023 Decanter World Wine Awards Gold at 2023 International Wine & Spirit Challenge Margaret River Gold at 2021 Royal Adelaide Wine Show Our order is packed and making its way to Adelaide. Anyone who has ever seen the traditional production of a glass is struck by how fascinating this ancient craft is. There is a charm to the apparent contradiction of the primal fire and the demanding work of the glowing furnace with the precise mechanics and the instinct that is necessary to create these works of art. Despite the simplest of tools, the master glassmakers achieve an astonishing precision that cannot be achieved in this form even with the most modern technology thus giving the human component an outstanding value. As in music, where the handmade violins of the experienced masters from Cremona are considered by many to be unmatched despite today’s possibilities in the production of modern violins, Zalto glasses are fascinating instruments for drinking pleasure. 20 years after the launch of the initial Zalto 'Denk Art' glasses, Zalto presents an innovative new shape, named Balance… The new glass integrates, balances and harmonises without distorting the underlying true character traits from terroir, fruit, saltiness, acid and tannin structure. The glass quietens the foreground and dominance of individual flavour elements such as tannin or phenols to ensure a harmonious balance. The size of the surface area, between the Bordeaux and Burgundy glasses, gives the wine the necessary space to develop, while the strong conical side walls (even more so than in the Burgundy glass) focus the aromas at a short distance, integrating them and combining them into a harmonious whole. Together with the specific aperture and a more direct angle, the glass integrates the individual characteristic aromas and flavours of the wine in this triangle, in a perfectly balanced ratio. The glass provides an ethereal delicacy while maintaining focused precision. Similar to the finest teas, the glass elicits subtle details from the wine without allowing certain harsh flavours to take centre stage. This new glass bridges to his legacy of the perfect wine glass. The basic principles of his legendary glasses can be found in this new 'Balance.' After countless hours of tasting and conceptualising, the perfect glass was filtered out from of over 100 prototypes. As in all the glasses, the earth's angle can be found both in the base area and in the inclination of the side walls. Zalto has informed The Vinorium of high demand and pre-ordering being essential to guarantee stocks prior to Christmas. Accordingly, we are releasing ‘Balance’ on a pre-arrival special. 99 Points - James Halliday “Follows Bailey Carrodus's method of co-fermenting small amounts of viognier, marsanne adding floral notes, and mataro adding spice. It's another exquisite wine from '17, capturing all the senses immediately you assess the bouquet and palate. It's only just into medium-bodied territory, but it's mouthwatering in its intensity, red fruits flying high like a gaudy scarlet kite.” 85% sold - Only 44 bottles remain 2012 Killibinbin Museum Release Cabernet Sauvignon Stuart McCloskey "Undeniably, Cabernet Sauvignon is my favoured varietal. Perhaps 17-years working in the Bordeaux trade is to blame, nonetheless I still perk-up when a good example arrives at my desk. This has all the vibes of an old-school Château Beychevelle, Talbot, Leoville Barton etc… The bouquet exudes to the sweetest tune of plum, cassis, leather, cedar, mint, violet, sweet tobacco, spice, kirsch, menthol and star anise. Gamey notes develop with more aeration as do the telltale tobacco and saddle leather notes. Utterly intoxicating and it has my unbridled attention. The palate is an absolute charmer – suave, svelte, fleshly, generous, sophisticated and highly addictive. What a beauty… The fruit is ample, succulent and fills every facet of the palate. The tannins are ripe, and the acidity is spot-on. I served her on the ‘cooler’ side and straight from bottle to my glass, which I highly recommend. She’s exuberant in a modest way, but excites the hell out of me. This is exactly why I love my job. I believe I get more joy from wines of this value and drinkability than I do from the hundreds I sample above £50… Keep her cool and she’ll treat you with the same degree of respect. What a girl. I love her… Drink now to 2028+ and perhaps for longer, but I see little point in denying yourself of the pleasure… Served using Zalto Burgundy glassware as it holds the wonderful perfume better than the Bordeaux." £20.95 per bottle Available for delivery from Mid-End October Explore our latest additions |
