Austria

Austrian wine production is predominately dry, white varieties with the crisp, white, aromatic Gruner Veltliner taking the lead, closely followed by the popular Riesling. Wachau, Kamptal and Kremstal are the most famous regions, producing some Austria’s best wines. As well as its wine production, Austria produces some of the finest crystal glassware in the world under the Riedel brand. Austria has been at the centre of a number of wine making scandals that hugely tarnished its image. This included ‘The 1985 diethylene glycol wine scandal’ where wine was doctored with chemicals in order to sweeten the wine and make it appear more full bodied. It has taken time to rebuild its reputation, however today Austria exports some of the world’s finest wines white wines.
