Langhorne Creek is a tiny region in South Australia about an hours drive from Adelaide, sitting on the flood plains of the Bremer and Angas Rivers. During the winter, the Bremer River is diverted in order to irrigate the land through an ingenious system of levees and floodgates that divert nutrient rich water which is captured and used to drip irrigate the Langhorne vineyards. This makes Langhorne quite unique and gives it an advantage over many South Australian regions. It’s one of Australia’s oldest wine regions, with wineries dating back to the mid-19th century and vineyards still in existence that are over 100 years old. Known primarily for its Cabernet Sauvignon, the region is considered to be one of Australia’s best kept secrets. Its climate is cooled by the southerly winds which reduces excessive heat during the day and help to increase humidity. This all equates to a region that is perfect for growing high quality grapes creating cult wines and reputations for producers such as the great John’s Blend, the project of John Glaetzer who is the senior wine maker at Wolf Blass.
